Hi to all Strachan's around the world. My name is Lady
Clair Mumberson, nee Strachan. My father is Alan and his
father was John (Jack) Strachan. John was born in
Edinburgh and moved to Berwick and married a local girl Margaret
Purves. They had 8 children. Both are dead now. But
they're a 2 sets of Strachan's in Berwick, and each family claim
to not be related to one another! I'm not so sure there
are strong likenesses! I've traced back as far as the
lairds I wonder what happened to loose our title? I bought
it back.

Hi I am looking for any information on the descendents of my
Strachan family. My Great grandfather James Strachan was born
1811 in Auchindoir and Kearn, Aberdeenshire, Scotland he was the
son of Robert Strachan and Isobel Robb who were married on 25Th
November 1810 in Auchindoir and Kearn. Their were four other
children of this marriage,Jean 1813,William 1816,Robert 1820 and
John in 1823 all born in Boharm Morayshire, Scotland. James
Strachan married Isabella Hair in 1839 and came to
Australia.Jean married and lived in Ireland, Robert joined the
army, John ? and William, William married Helen Thompson in 1842
at Mortlach, Aberdeenshire, William & Helen Strachan had 12
children Jean in 1842, John 1844, Elspet 1846, Margaret Bennet
1848, William 1850,Isabella 1852 these children were born in
Boharm, Morayshire. Other children James 1854, Helen 1856,
Robert Smith and Elizabeth Smith 1859, George 1861 and Mary
Christie 1864 were born in Fochabers, Morayshire. My great great
grandfather Robert Strachan who married Isobel Robb, Robert was
born 1787 in Rhynie and Essie, Aberdeenshire to William Strachan
and Isabel Hay, their was a gap of 18 years between the births
of Robert and the first born John 1769 in Tullynessle & Forbes &
Kearn to William Strachan and Isabel Hay,I am sure other
children would have been born within the 18 years but I am
unable to find any or if there was any other reason why only two
children were born so far apart. Any help, advice or information
no matter how small would be greatly appreciated. Merry
Christmas and a safe and healthy 2008 Kindest regards John

Looking for information: My grandfather, John Strachan, was born
May 7, 1899 in Renton (County Dumbarton), Scotland. He lived in
Waterbury, Connecticut most of his adult life. His father was
James, his mother was Jessie Blackwood. James Strachan's father
was Peter (a boatman) also of Renton who was married to Mary L.
McFarlane. I believe that Peter and Mary were married July 6,
1844 in Cardross. Any further informatin on Peter Strachan,
possibly born in 1815 in Dunbarton, would be appreciated. Word
from any Strachan relatives from around Renton/Alexandria would
be welcome. My grandfather's sisters were Jessie and Lizzie
Strachan (neither of whom married). I believe that Lizzie may
have passed away around 10 years ago.

Charles Strachan christened at Fettercairn,31 March 1783, was
the son of Charles Strachan and Elizabeth Smart. Elizabeth was
from Edzell, and is buried there. Charles Jnr was the older
brother of my great-great-grandfather, Walter Strachan, who
later farmed and brought up his family at Cairnton of Balbegno
(the farm was part of the Fasques Estate). Charles Jnr emigrated
to Jamaica, where, by 1840, he was the owner of two
plantations/estates. Elizabeth's tombstone in the Edzell
cemetery states that Charles was living on/at Southampton,
Island of Jamaica. I am keen to follow up any leads on Charles's
Jamaican descendants, and to obtain a photograph of him, if one
exists.

Good Day Jim: It was a pleasure speaking with you on the phone
earlier this week, and your information was very helpful and has
opened up whole other areas for my own family tree research. As
I have mentioned before, in 1983 a distant cousin of mine,
Richard Strahin of Spring Lake, NC (now deceased) published a
book on our immediate family called THE FAMILY STRAHIN. Some of
the same information in it can be correlated on your site, and
that definitely establishes a connection somewhere. Please feel
free to keep in touch, and some information will be coming your
way soon. Take care and God bless.

Hello, I'm Michael Strachan and I live in Fraserburgh. My family
have been in this town since around 1890 and have been traced in
Aberdeenshire back to c.1700. My great grandparents were Robert
J. Strachan (1891-1953) and Margaret Bell Noble (1892-1934). He
served for the full four years during WW1. His parents were
Robert Strachan (1868-1917) and Bella Birnie (1870-1959). He
was killed at sea when his vessel struck a mine during WW1. His
parents were Robert Strachan (1848-1929) and Elizabeth McWilliam
(1845-1885). He had 17 children to two wives in the countryside
around Fraserburgh. The descendents of Robert span the globe. If

My family has been in the United States for a couple of hundred
years, but may be related to the John Strain shown in the
"Strain DNA Project" that came over from Scotland as part of the
"Scottish Plantation Project" (1700-1770?). My first known
ancestor here in the US was Andrew Strain (North Carolina). My
most direct ancestor is my great-grandfather, (Andrew's
grandson?) John K. Strain (North Georgia). Our line's family
research came up with the stag coat of arms and information from
Ireland, with the caveat that, while the name was shown in
Ireland, it was of Scottish origin. At the time, I did not
understand that, but this site is very helpful. It's a pity that
women cannot request family coat of arms, since matrilineal
descent is more easily proven. At any rate, I WOULD check the
box and add to the request for family coat of arms and Clan
Chief, were I able to do so. Thank you for the information and I
will continue to support the clan's effort, as I can.

The name has been carried down the generations with my uncle

Hello, My ancestors come from Kirkinriola, Ballymena, Co.
Antrim, Northern Ireland. The family lived for about 3 to 4
generations there, having come over from either SW Scotland,
Ayrshire, or from NW England, maybe from the Linen Industry of
those two areas? As far back as I can go at the moment, my
gggrandfather was a Henry Strahan m Jane Gardiner, their son
David m Sarah Christie and migrated to Australia, after David
had tried his luck in North America (Canada?) with some of his
brothers and did not like it, he came back to Ireland then went
out to Australia. His brother Henry Strachan\Strahan also came
out to Australia and married Eliza Christie, Sarah's sister or
cousin. David and Sarah were married in the Wellington Street
Presbyterian Church, Ballymena. David's son David Gardiner
Strachan m Ellen Mary Morrison, Ellen's family came out to
Australia from Mauchline, Stair, Trabochmains, Ayrshire area.
Ellen's gradparents, James Morrison m Hellen Barclay at
Mauchline, there are Morrisons buried at Stair Church, as well
as Strachans. I am lead to beleive that the Morrisons were from
Norway, a shipwrecked son of the King of Norway named Muirson,
The name was anglisised to Morrison and they served as Breives
for one of the West Scotland Clans. This might be of interest to
Cheryl L McGhan, as her family comes from Kirkinriola I gather,
we may be related Craig Strachan May your glass be always half

My Great Grandfather James Milne Strachan (tailor) emmigrated to
New Zealand in 1875 aboard the ship Aldergrove. he was born in

Strachan (weaver) and Margaret Brown. He married Jane Cochrane
in Peebleshire and had a daughter Jane Anne born c1851 and a son
James (my Grandfather) born in 1853. Jane was the daughter of
William Cochrane and Elizabeth Cochrane who were cousins also
cousins of Dr Peter and Hugh Cochrane of Muckleree Perthshire.
My Great Grandfather I believe lived for a short time in Glasgow
before emmigrating to New Zealand with his family. My
Grandfather married Helen Moir in New Zealand in 1882. Helen
Moir was born at Orchard Cottage in Old Aberdeen in 1853 the
daughter of George Moir and Bethia Reanie. I have very little
information prior to my Great grandfather and would love to hear

pedigree of the famous Family of Strachan I saw that the last
known Head of the Family at the time was someone living I think
in Sweden in the 1930s. Or perhaps in Denmark. What happened to
this man? Had been told that Strachans did not belong to a clan
but to a tribe - the Tribe of Mar - and were referred to as a
Family. Good to see us coming up to date! Cheers, Ruth

Dear Clan Strachan, I am licencee at The Glenkindie Arms Hotel
and we proudly display the STRACHAN of Glenkindie Coat of Arms
on the front of our Hotel, ( as Dennis and Jim will testify to )
we have also incorporated it on our Polo shirts and are proud to
wear the coat of arms of the Strachan family.
A
note from Jim Strachan (Guestbook Moderator):
The hotel is called the Glenkindie Arms Hotel, and it's
located right down the road from Kildrummy Castle and
Glenkindie House (previous home to the old Strachan
baronetcy of Glenkindie). A must stop for all Strachans
visiting the area... even if it's for a quick pint with
Buster.

"Stroyan, " a professor of Educational Administration at Central

original origin of the name and explained how the name was

one of the first Blacks to arrive in America. After a number of
years, I tried to contact him for more information and his wife
told me that he had died. I wish that I had asked her for more

Subject: Response to Question |
|
Comments:
I recently received a question from a person who
was married to a Strachan, had children, and later divorced.
Specifically, she wanted to know if she and the kids could
become members of the Society. Unfortunately, the return email
and telephone number were not provided.
To answer your question, all membership applications are
processed by the Member Secretary and approved by the Board.
From a genealogical perspective, once you are married into a
family you become part of that family tree forever, regardless
of divorce, and especially if you have children!
Furthermore, the bylaws of the Society have no exclusion clause
pertaining to divorce (I helped write them). So, I think I'm on
fairly solid ground saying, you have a VERY good chance of being
accepted as a member.
Moreover, the Clan Strachan Society is an
inclusive organization. Even those with no blood, marriage, or
adoption ties to the Strachan clan can join under a "Non-Voting
Affiliate" membership... however, in your case I don't think
that would be a problem.
Finally, I think it admirable that you want to
provide your children a sense of history and culture. I know it
was very important to me when I was growing up. As you read the
notes below, I think you will find many who feel the same way.

Welcome to all!! Jim and myself have
finally gotten together after about 3 years of emails and gotten
this site and the Clan up and running. I will say that Jim is
the brains and most of the work behind this site. I'm more of
an idea guy.
Jim is a (Straken) and mine is (Strawn) so we have two guys with
both pronunciations!
And, yes... we look alike! I will say that the male line of
Strachan has certain characteristics. high eye ridges and cheek
bones, deep set eyes and in sonme cases very large ears!
I got lucky and got my moms ears! poor Jim! LOL!
When I first met Ben (my fathers and grandfathers name also) he
looked just like my great uncle! no doubt we are related!
I have been into the Scottish Highland Games and Clan Gatherings
on the west coast for about 15 years now and I was the grounds
director for the San Diego Scottish Highland Games for 4 years.
We will be at most of the games in the San Diego, Orange County
and L.A. area this year with our new Clan tent. We were riding
on the coat tails of the Tribe of Mar clan tent because of our
affiliation with the Tribe of Mar but have decided to branch
out. We hope in the future to have Clan Tents at the games
nearest you. The Strachan tartan is the Mar district tartan with
blue added. You can properly wear both.
I have just returned from Scotland this past summer where I met
and became friends (well family) with Ben and asked him if he
would be interested in becoming our chief. Being the humble man,
he said that he would accepted if, we would all have him. By the
way he is the only Strachan (Strawn) in the town of Strachan
(Strawn) and cannot claim at this time any tie to the last chief
Admiral Richard Strachan of Thornton. At this time all 5 house's
of Strachan are extinct. We might be starting a 6th house in
nominating Ben!! we will keep all informed as we walk through
this process.
My line and spelling come from Missouri by way of the Carolinas
in the early 1700's. Another group of Strachans came over in
1699 with William Penn and still reside in Pennsylvania but have
change the spelling to the phonetic Strawn. As Jim has written
in his book, most in Scotland and around Aberdeen and
Aberdeenshire pronounce it Straken but a few still say it the
old way as does Ben. The name comes from "the Strath of Awen" or
the valley of the river Awen. By the way the picture that I took
of Ben on this web site has him standing in that valley with the
river in the back ground!
A wee bit of fun history for you all. Do you all recall the
movie "Cat Balou" ? Lee Marvin and Jane Fonda? anyway Lee Marvin
plays two characters "Kid Shaleen" and the bad guy with the
silver tipped nose...thats right STRAWN!!! if you havent seen
the movie rent it...worth the time.
as for my side of the Strachan clan in the late 1800's along the
Kansas/ Missouri border a certain Samuel Strawhun was shot and
killed by Wild Bill Hickock. in the newspaper article about the
fight his name was spelled 4 different ways!
as far as we can gather Sam and Bill had had previous run ins
with each other and rumor has it Sam had once bested Bill in a
fist fight. so the blood was bad. Sam and his cronies went into
the local saloon and ordered beers on a hot summer day. the
bartender had just gotten in a new batch of glass beer mugs from
St Louis and asked Sam not to take them out of the bar. Sam
refused and went out with mug in hand. Bill rides in and goes in
for a drink. the bartender ask Bill to help him out with Sam.
one word led to another and Bill pulled and fired hitting Sam
right in the forehead killing him instantly! pure murder and it
almost caused a riot in the town where Sam was well known and
liked.
I encourage you all to continue in your search for your family
and I can guarantee this... every year that goes by you will
learn something new and wonderfull about your heritage and
yourself. I was hooked when I discovered our clan motto "non
timeo sed caveo" I do not fear but am cautious. That pretty much
sums me up. I do not fear much but I am a cautious guy.
once again welcome to you all and I hope that I have the chance
to meet you all at some time or another.
talk soon d

My Strachan family have their
early origins in Gamrie Banffshire. Most of the known history is
that the family farmed at Peathill (close to Fraserburgh) from
around 1810 to the 1970's when the family connection with the
Peathill district seemed to come to an end. Families connected
by marriage are Lawrence, Birnie, Mair, Milne, Rae and Walker.
My search for family is stalled so I hope this message can start

Gildart. I would like to find a list of where each of these
indentured servants were transferred to. I found the list here
previously on another sites links. My aunt is doing reserach on
a man that is listed on the manifest as one of the indentures
servants from the 1747 voyage. And I know he escaped about a
year after he was placed there. I have info after he was there
and before he was captured however I have nothing of where he
was indentured. If you have any of this info it would be greatly

Strachan, born May 3, 1926, died March 24, 1990. He was one of
two sons of Helen MacCormack and William Strachan, both of
Paisley. William died in 1958, Helen in the 1980s. His brother's
name was Ian Strachan and he died in 1976. They both came to
Canada in the 1950s and married Canadians. I have a brother and
sister and we all live in Ontario with our families, and my
uncle had three children, Maureen Strachan (presently married
and living in Georgia), a son William and a son John, both in
Ontario.

name is Don, his brothers name is Dee, they didn't even know
there were rivers in Scotland by that name.

This is a really interesting site
that I just found. I live in North Carolina and I am doing a
senior memory book. Thanks for all the great information about
my history and my last name has a new spelling not listed on
this site!

Hi Jim! I met your brother John
on the phone today. I was blown away when I found he has the
same name as my father! My grandfather was John Brown Strachan.
I know he had a brother but not much more than that. You have
done an excellent job with your site. Thanks so much! Perhaps
since I'm in Anaheim, one day we will meet!

I didn't know there was so much
info on my name. This is great. I can't claim relation to the
clan though ... I'm Jewish. I know my grandfather, George
Strachan, was from Edinburgh, and he moved to the US after WWII.
Either his father or grandfather moved to Scotland from
Russia/Poland/Lithuania (depending on what time period you
check) and I believe the name was changed to Strachan at that
time. Does anyone know anything else regarding this? I am in NY, | | |
